Gaming Art - Week 2 | 1st pitch

Some of us got together on the weekend to help each other out and brainstorm gaming ideas. It was pretty helpful and fun.

 A summary of the game's story, focusing on game play
You control an Astronaut sent to space by the NASA, whose mission is to repair a satellite that has been damaged by an asteroid storm. To get to the satellite, the astronaut will have to avoid asteroids, comets and other space assets and defeat aliens along the way.

Also, the astronaut's life is limited, since this is the available oxygen in his tank, which will decrease gradually.  He will have to collect little oxygen cans on the way to in order to survive.

He can also collect yummy astronaut food which gives points that can be cashed for objects that make his journey through the asteroid storm easier.

Unique selling points

  • Because the game gets more difficult as it goes on, the player will want to keep playing until finishing it (self-improvement, challenge).
  • Low poly style
  • Space themed

BSA227 - Week 9 | Nuke: Green Screen

Import all the files with Read nodes.  Add a Keylight node and on the right side click the color pipe and select the green screen. Change the view to Screen Matte to see the result in grayscale values. This way is easier to control the amount of green without altering the character too much. Add a Roto node and mask the character. Merge the mask and the background with a Merge node. Change the View to Final Result . The background is too big for the screen format. To fix this add a Reformat node. Lastly, I corrected the colour of the character to make her fit better in the background's lighting.

Gaming Art - Week 7 | Mudbox + LOD in Maya and Unity

MUDBOX The first thing is import the the objects in Maya, in this case a low poly bridge. Delete the history and attributes and send it to Mudbox ( File > Send to Mudbox > Send as new scene ). Under the Select/Move Tools Tab click on the Scale tool and scale it 10x10x10, because the scale is different between Mudbox and Maya. Increase the Subdivision levels up to 5 with Shift+D . Create a new sculpt layer. Now we can start carving. Select the sculpt tool and some stamp, increase the Strength to 100 and make the size pretty small. Activate Invert Function and start carving the stones. After that I added a granulated texture with a very big brush and weak strength. Then import a rock texture for the stones and set it as a stencil or stamp. Under the Paint Tools tab select the Projection and start painting. Oh, and do this in a new diffuse Paint Layer . Gaming Art - Week 1 | Game selection

We got homework on our very first class. We have to do some research on three games that we like: an in NZ developed game, Indie and AAA. NZ Game: Extinction Squad Pik Pok games:  http://pikpok.com/ Join daredevil scientist Chuck Darwin's elite team of zoological defenders and embark on a globe-trotting adventure to rescue endangered animals from extinction. Dodos, gorillas, pandas, lions and more are GOING TO DIE unless you catch them with your official Extinction Squad trampoline and bounce them to safety. Miss and they will be nothing but bloody smears on the ground...and footnotes in the natural history books. Indie Game: Super Hot I found out about this game watching this reaction/gameplay video . I think the concept is very smart and it takes a bit of strategy to play.
